The Verbal Behavior Laboratory (VBLAB) is affiliated with the Behavior Analysis program at California State University, Sacramento. The conceptual framework of all research conducted in the VBLAB was set forth by B.F.Skinner's (1957) analysis of language as learned behavior.

Currently, our research focuses on understanding the function(s) of certain linguistic response forms and the subsequent role that verbal behavior plays in the acquisition and maintenance of complex discriminations (e.g., visual categorization, delayed matching to sample, arbitrary matching to sample). Most of our research projects involve testing environmental arrangements (i.e., antecedents and consequences) that would give rise to novel behavior in children with and without developmental disabilities. One of our goals is to refine and develop curricula to teach verbal and verbally-mediated skills to children diagnosed with autism.
